The 2023 Season
The 2023 team had a great season, including a highlight win over undefeated (at the time) and eventual state champion South Burlington. We lost in the semifinals to a powerhouse Rice team. See pictures below from this fun season with crazy weather. We practiced indoors on turf (due to our muddy field), early in the morning (due to heat), but we had a fun season. Pics include fundraising and awareness games at BBA (Cancer), SB (Cancer), and our Morgan's Message Game at home.
Senior leaders Sophie Madden, Marlie Cartwright, Claire Marcoe, Maddy McDade (co-captain), and Emily Gay (co-captain)
Coaches Tucker Pierson, Nathalie Paquette, Alice McEnaney, Jess LaPlante, and Claire Thibeault

Burlington Free Press All-State Players from CVU
Picking the 28th edition of the Free Press All-State Field Hockey Team was, as ever, a demanding and a subjective task, but something we approach with great pride and care.
By taking into account available statistics, feedback from coaches around the state, input from other media outlets and our own expertise, we laid out who we think are the very best: A first team full of players any team would covet, a second team and honorable-mention listing full of even more.
Champlain Valley senior Tess Everett is the Free Press player of the year for 2022 after leading the Redhawks to their first title in 14 years. In total, 34 players are honored — a tough list to crack but one that has stood for 28 years as Vermont's true All-State team.
* * * *
THE FIRST TEAM
TESS EVERETT
Champlain Valley Union High School
Senior, midfield
► Player of the year
•The player: Everett never exited in CVU's semifinal and championship triumphs as the midfield maestro powered the Redhawks' title run. Everett is a multi-sport standout and the superb athleticism shines on the field. Everett's season exploits include three goals and nine assists, while adding a strong defensive prescence for CVU. "A steady and strong midfield player, Tess is like the current of the river carrying the ball along to her teammates," CVU coach Tucker Pierson said. "She eliminates defenders, transfers the ball, and has been integral in our scoring opportunities and offensive penalty corners."
•Trophy case: BFP player of the year 2022; first team 2022; first team 2021. Metro Division first team 2022, 2021; second team 2020.
MIRANDA OPPENHEIMER
Champlain Valley Union High School
Senior, forward
•The player: Big-time games and opportunistic goals are just part of Oppenheimer’s role for the Redhawks. The forward tallied 11 times in a 46-goal season for CVU and keyed set pieces for the Division I champions. Oppenheimer’s overtime goal secured Champlain Valley’s crown and overdue title celebration. “She was involved in every part of our offense, including playing a pivotal role in our penalty corners,” CVU coach Tucker Pierson said. “Miranda redefended all over the field and worked to earn possession for our team. Truly a difference-maker.”
•Trophy case: BFP first team 2022. Metro Division first team 2022; honorable mention 2021.
DANIELLE GAMELIN
Champlain Valley Union High School
Senior, defense
•The player: Champlain Valley’s championship berth was thrown a lifeline with Gamelin's chase down steal in the semifinals. The Redhawks became accustomed to Gamelin's heroic defense as CVU allowed just 10 goals this fall. The speed and strength to play defense and the skills of a midfielder made Gamelin a standout. "She is a fiery and fast defender who can carry the ball through the midfield and distribute it with confidence," Champlain Valley coach Tucker Pierson said. "She is a co-captain who played with grit and determination all season."
