2025 Pre Season CVU Field Hockey

The 2025 Season-

It's So Close!! Are you ready?!

Varsity Tryouts:
Thurs. 8/14, 8-10:30am
Fri. 8/15, 8-10:30am
Sat. 8/16, 8-10:30am

JV Tryouts:
Mon. 8/18, 8-9:45am
Tues. 8/19, 4-6pm

What you'll need:
-Registration Completed: https://athletics.cvuhs.org/registration.html
-Field Hockey Stick
-Shinguards, mouthguard
-Cleats and running shoes

What you will need before you can try out for field hockey on August 14:

1.  Register with CVU on Arbiter Sports
Each player will need to register and provide a current wellness form from their doctor.

2.  Attend Meet the Coaches Night on Weds., August 13, at 6pm in the CVU Gym. There will be a field hockey meeting with coaches immediately following the school presentation.

Players are expected to be in good conditioning shape, demonstrate a high level of stick skills AND show very good tactical knowledge of field hockey.
We will evaluate players based on 3 areas:
-Technical Skills (ball control, stick work, 1v1 eliminations)
-Tactical Sense of the Game (field sense, how you play in scrimmage, 2v1s)
-Conditioning (athleticism, preparation for tryouts, potential)

Also, we will evaluate coachability, attitude, commitment, and leadership. Varsity athletics are a big time commitment, and we expect that players will be at every practice and game, 6 days per week, and that they will be ready to compete at a high level.

Conditioning:
Players should expect to run a timed mile that will be a bench mark for their basic conditioning. We will also do runs each day, e.g. "Survivor" or "300s" or a timed mile. Therefore, summer conditioning should be part of your preparation for the season!
We have emailed the packet to all players who were interested in playing field hockey.

The 2024 Season

Picture
2024 Varsity Field Hockey Team
We had so much fun this fall! Our varsity team was a dedicated group of athletes who pushed each other to be better field hockey players. Finishing with a 10-5-1 record, we lost to eventual state champion Rice in the Semi-finals at UVM on 10/29/24. We beat a strong Colchester team in the Quarterfinals in 2 OT! Cordelia Thomas '26 put away a penalty stroke in 2OT to send us to the Semis.

Our JV team, coached by Jess LaPlante, had a fun and good season that was marked by a lot of improvement and skill-building.

The 2023 Season

The 2023 team had a great season, including a highlight win over undefeated (at the time) and eventual state champion South Burlington. We lost in the semifinals to a powerhouse Rice team. See pictures below from this fun season with crazy weather. We practiced indoors on turf (due to our muddy field), and early in the morning (due to heat), but we had a great season. Pics include fundraising and awareness games at BBA (Cancer), SB (Cancer), and our Morgan's Message Game at home.
Senior leaders Sophie Madden, Marlie Cartwright, Claire Marcoe, Maddy McDade (co-captain), and Emily Gay (co-captain)

Burlington Free Press All-League Teams and Twin State Roster

Burlington Free Press Article- All-State Teams
Burlington Free Press All-State Players from CVU
Picking the 28th edition of the Free Press All-State Field Hockey Team was, as ever, a demanding and a subjective task, but something we approach with great pride and care.

By taking into account available statistics, feedback from coaches around the state, input from other media outlets and our own expertise, we laid out who we think are the very best: A first team full of players any team would covet, a second team and honorable-mention listing full of even more.
Champlain Valley senior Tess Everett is the Free Press player of the year for 2022 after leading the Redhawks to their first title in 14 years. In total, 34 players are honored — a tough list to crack but one that has stood for 28 years as Vermont's true All-State team.
* * * *
THE FIRST TEAM

TESS EVERETT
Champlain Valley Union High School
Senior, midfield
► Player of the year
•The player: Everett never exited in CVU's semifinal and championship triumphs as the midfield maestro powered the Redhawks' title run. Everett is a multi-sport standout and the superb athleticism shines on the field. Everett's season exploits include three goals and nine assists, while adding a strong defensive prescence for CVU. "A steady and strong midfield player, Tess is like the current of the river carrying the ball along to her teammates," CVU coach Tucker Pierson said. "She eliminates defenders, transfers the ball, and has been integral in our scoring opportunities and offensive penalty corners."
•Trophy case: BFP player of the year 2022; first team 2022; first team 2021. Metro Division first team 2022, 2021; second team 2020.

MIRANDA OPPENHEIMER
Champlain Valley Union High School
Senior, forward
•The player: Big-time games and opportunistic goals are just part of Oppenheimer’s role for the Redhawks. The forward tallied 11 times in a 46-goal season for CVU and keyed set pieces for the Division I champions. Oppenheimer’s overtime goal secured Champlain Valley’s crown and overdue title celebration. “She was involved in every part of our offense, including playing a pivotal role in our penalty corners,” CVU coach Tucker Pierson said. “Miranda redefended all over the field and worked to earn possession for our team. Truly a difference-maker.”
•Trophy case: BFP first team 2022. Metro Division first team 2022; honorable mention 2021.

DANIELLE GAMELIN
Champlain Valley Union High School
Senior, defense
•The player: Champlain Valley’s championship berth was thrown a lifeline with Gamelin's chase down steal in the semifinals. The Redhawks became accustomed to Gamelin's heroic defense as CVU allowed just 10 goals this fall. The speed and strength to play defense and the skills of a midfielder made Gamelin a standout. "She is a fiery and fast defender who can carry the ball through the midfield and distribute it with confidence," Champlain Valley coach Tucker Pierson said. "She is a co-captain who played with grit and determination all season."
•Trophy case: BFP first team 2022. Metro Division first team 2022; second team 2021.
